The cooperation between professionnals and amateurs in planetary astronomy : conference at the SAT

The pro/am cooperation in planetary astronomy is currently experimenting a serious renewal. On june 7, 8 and 9, the Astronomical society of Touraine (SAT), in France, organized the astronomical nights of Touraine, a week-end of observations for amateurs. Several speakers had been invited by the SAT to give talks on various topics. The SAT wanted to invite the Committee of planetary observations of the SAF to give one on about the pro/am cooperation in planetary astronomy and I have represented the Committee with pleasure.

I must confess I have been suprised myself while preparing the talk by how much there is to say already ! And nicely surprised as well to hear so many relevant questions at the end. This is a real sign of interest from a public that did not come to attend especially my conference.

Here is a summary of the talk. You can download it in PDF format from the image below.

  1. How quality amateur observations helped the revival of a demand of cooperation from scientists
  2. What kind of links are getting created between the two worlds
  3. The tour of the potential of each planet : what are the scientific observations possible today ?
  4. How to participate ? The equipment and a description of amateur networks in planetary astronomy
